How to Join Troop 7

 Welcome to Troop 7 of Port Washington, NY!  This page gives you the information and access to the forms you need to get you/your son started with us.  
Who is TROOP 7 FOr?
Troop 7 is for boys in grades 6-12. Many boys move up from the cub scouts, but this is not required.
Where AnD WHEN DOES TROOP 7 MEET?
Troop 7 meets weekly at:
United Methodist Church of Port Washington
35 Middle Neck Road
Port Washington, NY 11050
Wednesdays, 7:30 to 9:00 pm during the school year. There are additional events throughout the year.

How Much Does iT COst to Join?
​Dues are currently $175.00 per school year and are due in September of each year. First-year boys who join the Troop from Cub Scouts pay a first-year fee of $75 (plus paying in the first year directly online for the National registration and Boys’ Life subscription). Annual dues are set each year by the Troop Committee based on the active roster and troop financial situation. They are subject to change at any time. This fee covers registration, Boys’ Life, monthly camping fees, rank and merit badges, BBQ’s, Holiday Chow Down, Courts of Honor, and use/purchase of assorted Troop Equipment.
WHo RUNS the Troop?
The Troop is overseen by the Troop Committee (adults), which supports the Scoutmaster.
The Scoutmaster selects and trains Assistant Scoutmasters.
The Scoutmaster represents the Green Bar on the Troop Committee.
The Green Bar consists of the boy leadership of the Troop, and includes the following:
  • Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) Elected by the Scouts
  • Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL) Appointed by the SPL
  • Senior Patrol members Appointed by the SPL
  • Patrol Leaders (PL) Elected by the Patrol
It is the Green Bar’s job to plan and run the Troop program. The Green Bar meets once per month under the direction of the Scoutmaster.
THE TROOP IS RUN BY THE BOYS, FOR THE BOYS!
Are PARENTS INVOLVED?
Yes, absolutely, parents can be involved as much as they would like to be. Parents are welcome to join the troop meetings and can join any of the weekend trips. Parents are also encouraged to join a parent committee. There are all sorts of others ways for parents to get involved, just ask.
Ready to Join? 
Are you a moving up from Cub Scouts, or transferring from another troop?
Follow these steps:
  1. Fill out transfer paperwork (scoutmaster to provide).
  2. ​Provide your contact information to Troop 7.
  3. Register for Scoutbook. You'll receive an invitation from the troop. This is where your scout will track his advancements. 
  4. Confirm your Youth Protection Training is up-to-date. All adults are required to complete this training. You can check it through your my.scouting.org account.
  5. Complete a BSA Annual Medical Form. ​Parts A & B are required upon joining, part C is for summer camp.
  6. Purchase a Scout Uniform and Handbook.​​


Are you brand new to scouting?
Follow these steps:
  1. Register with my.scouting.org. You will be asked to create an online account for yourself before registering your youth. Note your BSA number, you will need it later. 
  2. Register for Scoutbook. Once you register, your scoutmaster will receive a notification and then will invite you to Scoutbook. This is where your scout will track his advancements. 
  3. Complete Youth Protection Training. All adults are required to complete this training. You can access it through your my.scouting.org account.
  4. Provide your contact information to Troop 7.
  5. Complete a BSA Annual Medical Form. Parts A & B are required upon joining, part C is for summer camp.
  6. Purchase a Scout Uniform and Handbook. 

Additional helpful information for new scouts:

  1. Check out the Troop Calendar, and mark your personal calendars for Troop activities.
  2. Begin to learn about the overall Advancement process for your son. From the Scout Handbook, review the Cyber Chip requirement for the rank of Scout, and complete this with your son.
  3. Review the Troop 7 Equipment Guide. We can help in deciding what, when and how to buy.
  4. Review the Summary of Adult Job Descriptions and get involved!
  5. Review the Orientation Notes to learn what to expect from involvement in Troop 7.
